The Garden Begins

I went to Walmart this morning to get a shovel and mulch. I was going to get the plants at Walmart, but I felt overwhelmed looking at all these plants I didn't know the name of. So, I stopped by a family own plant nursery on my way home. I went in the office and said "this is my first time gardening.. I have no idea what any of these plants are." They were very nice! They gave me a buddy. It was an older petite (5'1" maybe) women probably in her 80's. She knew everything there was to know about plants. I told her what I was looking for and she gave me some suggestions. The maple tree I was hoping to get grows alittle to large for our yard, so she suggested a "burning bush" which also turns red during the fall. I got that instead of the maple tree. I did get some azaleas.. The white ones little alittle boring, so I got two different shades of pink. :) After picking out 3 fairly large plants, the lady who was giving me advice would not let me carry them. She picked all 3 plants up herself and carried them around every where I went. I felt so bad! She was one strong women!

They didn't have any daffodils bulbs, so she suggested some other plants to get that will come back next year, such as the Spike Speedwell and Origami Red and White (I think that's the right name? I have forgotten already). I got those two things. The lady continued carrying around all of my items. She was so nice! I figured that would be enough planting for one day, so she graciously carried them all to my car and loaded my car for me. She wouldn't let me help! Anyways, I am definitely going back there for the rest of the garden. Hopefully, I can help carry some of the plants next time.

So.. the plants I picked are a little off from what I wanted, but I think it looks good. I probably should have spread the bushes out more... I will have to keep snipping them when they start crowding each other.

This is a view from a room in our house.

I planted the azaleas, burning bush, and speedwells here.

You can see my neighbors garden to the side (with the blue ball). We are competing. lol I am going to stick with more plants, less lawn items though.

This is where I planted the other flowers. The soil was really moist here from all the rain we have gotten. Hopefully, the roots won't rot. I didn't give them any water because the soil was so wet.. I guess that's ok?

To answer Mary's question about the AC area, this is where the air conditioning stuff is. The builder of the house planted these plants around the AC stuff. I may add some flowers later. ( I don't even know what these plants are. Does anyone know? )

Injuries... I busted up my knuckles. After that, I put gloves on. I should have done that in the first place!

So.. it's only 1PM. Now, what to do on my only day off this week? I have to work the rest of the week, so that will keep me busy. :)

You did a great job picking and planting your new plants. They look great. See you are a gardener after all. Love you lots,Mom

Looks lovely so far, Holly! You could eventually do the entire length of the fence if you wanted. They probably didn't have daffodil bulbs because spring bulbs are usually sold in the autumn, as that's when it's best to plant them. So maybe this autumn you could get things like daffodils, crocuses & tulips for early spring color! :)

Would you ever put a fence or hedge along the border between you & your neighbor's to separate your properties more?

I agree, if the soil was good and wet, there's no need for extra watering.

Did you get a chance to look at any of the flower picture links? What do you think of the flowers?

Here's another idea: a trellis with a clematis or roses up the side of the house (back or front)! Pictures of Clematis: http://www.clematischoice.co.uk/shop/

Okay, I'd better stop now before I ramble too much... ;P

Hope you have a great day!

P.S. I usually use dishwashing gloves for gardening! They're cheap, give enough protection but allow greater flexibility than bulkier garden gloves.

Poor you! It's just a learning process! ;)

Good job on the yard! Every bit it worth it.

We have some neighbors that thin out their garden and give us their extra flowers. Also a couple from the church have given us a bunch of azeleas. Our yard is finally coming together. It was only a great big sand box 3 years ago. We have grass! We found out that if we bagged the bermuda clippings from the sod in the front yard and put it in the back, the seeds would fall in and sprout. That save SO much money. Have to watch out for the weeds, though.

Hey Mary!

I'm hoping to do the entire length of the fence. We are starting to think about getting a fence to seperate our yards. I just talked to my neighbor a few weeks ago when she was outside planting and she told me she didn't want a fence up... So I being nice responded with I don't want one either. That was during my neighbors buch fence phase. She decided not to go with that. She had a whole fence of bushes planted.. then she tore them all up and started planting them else where. It was strange.

I looked at the websites. They should be very helpful! Thank you!

Hey Elisa!

That's nice of your neighbors! :) We have a serious weed problem. If you notice the yellow looking stuff in our grass, it's some type of weed. We sprayed last weekend, but it didn't kill that weed?

Your garden is the coolest holly. You should come to Poland and help me plant something. How is no school life treating you these days....

Hey, Holly! Thanks for all your comments, we've been out a lot the last two days so I haven't had time to respond till now! That's weird about your neighbor... um... I would ask her again, though technically as its your property you can do what you want... we have weird neighbors too. They are weird in that they never answer their door and let their yards go all wild and keep trying to get planning permission for buildings schemes on their big property, which we & all of the people around us don't want as it would involve lots of bulldozers and noise for a long time in a small cul-de-sac and really reduce the privacy of our back yard! Anyway... I hope your neighbors are nice about the fence now that their bush scheme has failed!

Thanks for the link! I'll send you my e-mail. I also got your graduation card two days ago, thanks for sending that, it was cool to see it! Congrats again!

Thanks for the Happy Birthday too. I'm 31 but don't "feel" like I'm any older than I was 10 years ago. All of my problems have been health rather than age-related, so I rate age more on how I feel! I feel so much better on this low-carb diet, more energy and vitality and hopefully will get all the way better from the post-viral thing & the tailbone soon...

Thanks for sending a card (got Paul's comment!), I really look forward to getting it! Have a GREAT day and hope your gardening goes well!

Love you lots,
Mary

Dear John,

I was waiting for something exciting to happen. Blogs aren't fun to read if nothing cool happens! I will post soon though! :)
